How an MVHR System Works

An MVHR system is one central unit, usually in the attic, a utility room or a hot press, connected by ducts to every habitable room. It runs continuously at a low, quiet speed.

  • Extract: warm, moist air is drawn out of the kitchen, bathrooms, en suites and utility room, where the steam and smells are made.
  • Supply: fresh outside air is filtered and delivered to the bedrooms and living rooms.
  • Heat recovery: the two air streams pass through a heat exchanger without mixing, so most of the warmth in the outgoing air is passed to the incoming air.
  • Boost: the system speeds up when a shower or cooking adds moisture, then settles back.

The result is a house that is aired all day and night without opening windows, without draughts, and without throwing away the heat you paid for. In an airtight modern home it is the system that keeps condensation and mould away.

Lenard surveys new builds where the wrong ventilation led to mould (1 minute).

MVHR in a new build or an existing home

In a new build the unit position, duct routes and terminals are planned on the drawings before the walls go up, which is the cheapest and neatest way to do it. In an existing home we route the ducts through the attic and ceiling voids, or fit single room heat recovery units where whole house ducting is not practical.

MVHR compared with the alternatives

MEV (mechanical extract ventilation) extracts from the wet rooms and lets fresh air in through vents, with no heat recovery; it costs less to install and more to heat. PIV (positive input ventilation) pushes air from the loft into the house and suits some older homes, but it does not recover heat from the air leaving the house. Single room heat recovery units bring the MVHR principle to one room at a time. For an airtight home, MVHR installation is the option that ventilates every room and keeps the heat; our comparison of MVHR and PIV goes into more detail.

Our MVHR Installation Process

  1. Free preliminary quote. You send floor plans or photos with your Eircode; we reply by email with a price range and our notes.
  2. Survey and design. We confirm the unit position, the duct routes, the valve in each room and the outside terminals, and size the system to the house.
  3. Installation. Unit, ductwork, valves, terminals and controls. A planned retrofit of two systems has taken three days.
  4. Commissioning. We set and measure the airflow at every valve and balance supply against extract, so the system does what it was designed to do.
  5. Handover and annual service. You get the measured figures and a walk through the controls and filters. The annual VentSolve service keeps the 5 year warranty valid.

One customer who had two MVHR systems installed by us wrote in a Google review: “They were extremely responsive from the first enquiry, and completed the full installation efficiently over just three days. The workmanship was excellent throughout and everything was finished to a very high standard. Their pricing was also very competitive compared to others I had contacted.”

Looking after your MVHR system

An MVHR system needs little attention, but it does need it regularly. The filters are cleaned or replaced so the airflow stays as designed, the condensate drain is checked, and once a year the unit, the fans and the flows at the valves are checked. Our annual MVHR service covers all of this and keeps the 5 year warranty valid. Signs that a system needs attention are covered in our article on five signs your MVHR needs maintenance.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average cost of an MVHR system in Ireland?

Our installed prices in 2026 are €5,500 to €6,000 for a home up to 100 square metres, €6,000 to €7,000 for 100 to 200 square metres, €7,000 to €8,000 for 200 to 300 square metres and €8,000 to €9,500 above 300 square metres, including the unit, ductwork, valves, terminals and commissioning.

Is an MVHR system worth it?

For an airtight modern home, yes: it ventilates every room day and night, keeps most of the heat in the house and stops the condensation that leads to mould. In an older, draughty house with one problem room, a single room heat recovery unit or a better extractor fan can be the better value, and we tell you which after seeing the house.

Can you open windows with MVHR?

Yes, you can open the windows whenever you like; the system does not need them closed. Most people find they open them less in winter, because the system already brings in filtered fresh air without losing the heat.

Who installs the MVHR system?

VentSolve designs, installs and commissions the system, measures and balances the airflow at every valve, and services it every year. We hold NZEB Ventilation Certification, and our ventilation solutions meet the requirements for SEAI-supported retrofit projects.

How does MVHR work?

Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery pulls fresh air into the house while extracting stale, moist air, passing both streams through a heat exchanger where the outgoing air's heat is transferred to the incoming air without the two air streams mixing.

What warranty do you give on MVHR?

We provide a 5 year warranty on MVHR units, provided that the system is serviced annually by VentSolve throughout the warranty period.
