Which Ventilation System Does Your Home Need?
| System | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Whole house MVHR | One central unit supplies filtered fresh air to every room and extracts moist air, keeping most of the heat | New builds and homes with a route for ducts |
| Single room heat recovery | A through the wall unit per room with its own heat exchanger, no ductwork | Problem bedrooms, apartments, extensions |
| MEV | A central fan extracts continuously from the wet rooms; fresh air enters through vents | Budget whole house ventilation without heat recovery |
| Extractor fans | A fan in the bathroom, en suite or kitchen, on a timer or humidity sensor | One wet room with a steam or condensation problem |
Demand controlled ventilation works like MEV with fans and vents that respond to humidity. When people compare it with MVHR they often choose MVHR, because the installed price gap is small and MVHR keeps the heat.
Ventilation installation in a new build
Modern Irish homes are built to the NZEB standard and are airtight by design, so Part F of the Building Regulations expects a designed ventilation strategy. Ventilation installation is cheapest and neatest when the unit position, duct routes and outside terminals are on the drawings before the walls go up. Send us the plans at the design stage and we mark them up.
Ventilation installation in an existing home
In an older house we work with what is there: ducts routed through the attic and ceiling voids for whole house MVHR, through the wall single room units where ducting is not practical, and new or upgraded extractor fans in the bathroom and kitchen. Where an attic or roof space needs its own airflow, see attic ventilation and roof ventilation installation.

How Ventilation Installation Stops Condensation and Mould
A family produces several litres of water vapour a day from showers, cooking, drying clothes and breathing. In a modern, well insulated house that moisture has nowhere to go unless it is extracted. It ends up on the coldest surfaces: window glass, corners of external walls, the back of a wardrobe. That is where condensation forms and mould starts.
Ventilation removes the moist air where it is made and replaces it with drier outside air. With heat recovery it does so without throwing away the heat. If mould has already taken hold, our mould removal service treats the growth and the ventilation stops it returning.
Signs your home needs ventilation installation
- Condensation running down the windows every morning.
- Mould returning on ceilings, window reveals or behind furniture.
- A bathroom that stays steamy long after a shower.
- A musty smell or stuffy air when the windows are closed.
- A new airtight home or extension with no designed ventilation.
For a single bathroom the answer may be a whole bathroom ventilation system or just a better fan; for a damp whole house, MVHR or MEV.
